Coronavirus Update

Scouts Victoria is currently implementing controls that are consistent with current policy issued by the Department of Health on February 1 2020.

  • Members who have an acute case of respiratory infection and have been in mainland China at any time in the last 14 days or who have been in close contact with someone with a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus in the last 14 days should not participate in any Scouting activities.
  • Members who have travelled anywhere in mainland China since February 1 2020, or who have been in Hubei Province at any time since the outbreak on December 31 2019, should also not participate in any Scouting activities until they have been back in Australia for 14 days without displaying symptoms.

The risk for Scouts Victoria members is likely to be from close contact with somebody who has been in Wuhan in the last 14 days, or more recently in other provinces of mainland China. The risk to members would be exacerbated during overnight camps while sleeping in close proximity and where ensuring good personal hygiene is more difficult.

Some background:

Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) originated in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China in December 2019. Symptoms are generally flu-like, and deaths have only occurred in the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions. There is currently no specific treatment so treatment is focused on treatment of symptoms.

As of February 3, there are ~12,000 confirmed cases and ~260 deaths worldwide. Most confirmed cases, and almost all deaths, have been in mainland China. Cases outside of China are mostly people who have been in Wuhan or have been in close contact with somebody who has been in Wuhan. At the time of writing there have been four confirmed cases in Victoria, all who have all recently been in Wuhan.

It should be noted that the situation is evolving and our position may change at short notice. A significant change in position will be communicated by direct email (EDM) or otherwise through Be Informed or on the Scouts Victoria website.

The Department of Health and Human Services have released an informative poster regarding Coronavirus. You can download it in English or Chinese.
