Camp Niall History

Indigenous song-lines and old maps trace the local trails used for thousands of years by the Bunerong people of the Kulin nation.

Old Moorooduc Road and parts of Balnarring Road lie on these trails.

One trail diverges from Balnarring Road to follow the creek which is the northern boundary of Camp Niall.

The current dam wall of Devil Bend reservoir is built at a narrow gorge. This area was avoided by the Bunerong because a Devil lived in the bend of the gorge, hence the name “Devil Bend”.

The Tuerong tribe camped at the junction to Devil Bend creek (near the corner of Old Moorooduc Road and Balnarring Road).

This area is now a property called “Nedlands”.

In the 1960s, the owners of that time, the Niall Family, donated the south side of the creek to 1st Mornington Scouts. This is Camp Niall, now managed by Mornington Peninsula District Scouts.
