IGLUTE 2020 AT MT STIRLING
Due to THE Coronavirus social-distancing requirements & the unclear schedule for its threat being controlled, it is unlikely that the SKI touringevents will run this season - AS WE TRAVEL in GROUPS BY CAR TO OUR ACTIVITY LOCATIONS.
We will currently accept expressions of interest only for 2020 season – using our generic application Form HERE.
The long-standing IGLUTE introductory snow-camping weekend enables Venturers and linking Scouts to learn basic snowcraft skills and to try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on Mt. Stirling’s trails. More experienced skiers can ski to the summit and take in its glorious views, while beginning cross-country skiers can develop their formative snow mobility skills on the gentler practice slopes and nearby trails.
NOTE: Attendance at IGLUTE is dependent upon the Group’s own private transport to and from Mansfield and up to Mt Stirling and down again on Sunday. Generally, the drivers should be Leaders or parent helpers with sufficient on-snow experience for driving on-snow, ability to accompany the group and camp on-snow with them.
Venturers and their Leaders arrive at St. Mary’s Hall, at 48 Hunter Street Mansfield, by mid-evening on the Friday night. As each group arrives, they are registered, each individual’s gear is checked for completeness, their personal information checked and briefed on the weekend’s activities, before bunking down for the night.
Early Saturday morning we head up to Mt. Stirling, hire our skis, get our packs on and ski out to our campsite. Once there, we set up camp and those new to it can join in on some cross-country ski tuition. Venturers may join in building an igloo [snow depth permitting] – and then, if they’re keen enough, sleep in it. We’ve also got seven sets of snowshoes for you to try out in your groups or as individuals, too.
Scouts or Venturers attending IGLUTE should not be using cross-country skis for the first time as it involves skiing with a pack from the starting point. Either arrange to try cross-country skis independently or attend one of the scheduled Ski Intro Days at Lake Mountain, Mount Buffalo, or Mt St Gwinear, before coming.
Should your unit wish to participate in this introduction to snow-camping and on-snow travel, you can contact the State Leader, Ski Touring to discuss it or simply download & complete the application form (see the link below) and email it in.
Attendance cost: $50 per youth participant - this covers overnight accommodation in Mansfield, your vehicle resort entry charges and the IGLUTE Fleece Beanie which each participant receives. No charge applies for Leaders and Parent Helpers.
Gear hire: normally about $85 per person for cross-country skis, stocks and boots for the weekend. Each individual needs to7hire skis, boots & stocks - or snowshoes. These can be hired in Melbourne before coming, in Mansfield on Friday evening or from Mt Stirling Ski Hire on arrival at Telephone Box Junction on Saturday.
Don't forget SNOW CHAINS! We travel to Mt Stirling in private vehicles - having snow chains is mandatory for vehicle entry to the resort. Snow chains cost around $25 for a vehicle for the weekend and are hireable from ski hire shops or service stations in Mansfield - and as we park overnight in the Mt. Stirling carpark at snow level, don't forget to apply Antifreeze to your radiator.
