Iglute is a weekend long introduction to lightweight snow camping, snowshoeing and igloo building.
The long-standing IGLUTE introductory snow-camping weekend enables Venturers and linking Scouts to learn basic snowcraft skills and to try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on Mt Stirling’s trails. More experienced skiers can ski to the summit and take in its glorious views, while beginning cross-country skiers can develop their formative snow mobility skills on the gentler practice slopes and nearby trails.
NOTE: Attendance at IGLUTE is dependent upon the Group’s own private transport to and from Mansfield and up to Mt Stirling and down again on Sunday. Generally, the drivers should be either Leaders or parent helpers with sufficient on-snow experience for driving and ability to accompany the groups contingent and camp on-snow with them. It makes sense to try cross-country skis independently or attend one of the scheduled Ski Intro Days across July (see above) at Lake Mountain, Mt Buffalo or Mt St Gwinear, before coming.
Should you or your unit wish to participate in this introduction to snow-camping and on-snow travel then you can contact the State Leader for Ski Touring to discuss it or simply download & complete the application form (see the link below) and send it in by email.
Attendance cost: $30 per youth participant - to cover overnight accommodation in Mansfield, team member attendance costs and the Scout Fleece Beanie which each participant receives. No charge applies for Leaders and Parent Helpers to attend.
Gear hire: Usually $85 per person for cross-country skis, stocks and boots for the weekend. Each individual needs skis, boots and stocks or snowshoes. These can be hired in Melbourne before coming, in Mansfield on Friday evening or from Stirling Ski Hire on Saturday morning.
