Urban Walks for Joeys

Urban Explorers: Walking Safely Beyond the Hall

This activity helps Joey Scouts safely explore their local area through short urban walks. Joeys practise walking together as a group, using the buddy system, following simple rules, and noticing interesting places in their community. Urban walks are a great way to build confidence, introduce basic bushwalking skills, and get outside during a normal Joey night or a daytime activity.

    • Spotting landmarks

    • Counting crossings

    • Talking about what Joeys can see around them

3. Optional Walking Games

Penny Hike

  • At intersections, a Joey flips a coin to choose the direction

  • Leaders guide choices to ensure the group returns on time

Local Shop or Community Visit

  • Walk to local shops or a community place

  • Buy an item for an upcoming activity or donate to a food bin

Navigation Fun

  • Practise identifying left, right, or basic directions

  • Spot street signs, parks or familiar buildings

4. Return and Review

    • On return, allow time for water, snacks and toilets

    • Ask simple reflection questions:

      • What was our walk for?

      • What did you enjoy most?

      • What did we do well as a Group?

Change the challenge level

  • Keep walks short and close to the Hall for newer Joeys

  • Increase distance slightly for confident Units

  • Add simple navigation or observation challenges

  • For day walks, include longer breaks or a picnic

Reflection

  • How did we keep each other safe on our walk?

  • Why is staying with our buddy important?

  • What new places did you notice today?

  • What would you like to explore next time?
