• Scrumptious S'mores

    The Fundamental Series

Make this gorgeously gooey campfire treat, that’ll leave you wanting ’s’more‘

Get ready to enjoy a classic campfire treat with 'Scrumptious S'mores'! This fun and delicious activity teaches Scouts how to safely build and cook over a campfire while creating gooey marshmallow, chocolate, and biscuit sandwiches. Perfect for a cosy outdoor adventure filled with teamwork and tasty rewards.

Before you begin

  • Don’t forget to make sure all young people and adults involved in the activity know how to take part safely. Make sure you’ll have enough adult helpers for younger Sections.

Campfire building and cooking

  • Build and light a fire before starting this activity
  • Use the hot embers to cook on, so the fire will need enough time to die down before cooking
  • Run some fire safety activities before starting this activity
  • Make sure that the fire has been built outdoors in clear, open areas, with plenty of ventilation

What you will need

  • Marie Plain Biscuits
  • Chocolate Block
  • Marshmallows
  • Plates
  • Wooden Sticks
  • A bucket of water and/or sand
  • Fire blanket
  • First aid kit in case of burns

Getting ready to cook

  1. Gather everyone together in a circle and tell them you’re going to make some s’mores
  2. Show people how to use the equipment safely
  3. It’s important to use wooden sticks rather than metal skewers, which could get hot and burn people’s hands
  4. You could also use wooden handled extendable toasting fork, ensuring that hands don’t get too close to heat or fire

Make your s'mores

  1. Ask everyone to wash their hands
  2. Everyone should take a stick and marshmallow
  3. Gently push the marshmallow onto the top of the stick
  4. Everyone should toast a marshmallow above the embers of the campfire until it’s golden and gooey
  5. When ready, remove the marshmallow from the fire and take a plate
  6. Now, everyone should take two marie biscuits, making sure that they have a piece of chocolate on one
  7. Slide the marshmallow off the stick and make a gooey marshmallow sandwich
  8. Wait for a few moments for the heat of the marshmallow to melt the chocolate, and for it to cool down a little
  9. Enjoy your campfire treat!

Change the challenge level

Decrease the challenge

  • Cook your s’mores in aluminium foil
  • Assemble by wrapping in foil and putting it on the hot embers for about 5 minutes
  • Using heatproof tongs, carefully remove, give it a little squish, let it cool a little and carefully unwrap

Increase the challenge

  • Bake your own biscuits or make damper
  • Make handmade marshmallows (Boil sugar syrup and gelatin, whipping it until fluffy, and then setting it to firm up before cutting into squares)

Reflection

This activity gave everyone the chance to enjoy being outdoors and learn how to use fire safely. Here are some questions you could use, to help people reflect on the activity. You could use these throughout the session or at the end.

  • Why do we use sticks rather than metal skewers to toast marshmallows?
  • When everyone’s finished using fire, what should they do to stay safe?
  • What’s it like preparing food and eating outdoors?
