A Heritage Investigation
Introduction
Scouting has been active in Victoria since 1908, with thousands of Scouts shaping its history. Every Scout Group has its own unique story—its founding, traditions, and people who made an impact. In this activity, Scouts will research the history of their own Scout Group, uncover interesting stories, and learn how their Group has evolved over time.
Scouts will develop research, interviewing, and presentation skills, and contribute to preserving their Group’s history for future generations.
What you'll need
- Group history books or old records (check your Scout Hall)
- Photos of your Group from the past
- Names of past Leaders or members (for interviews)
- Notebook or recording device (to collect information)
- Computer or paper for creating a report or display
Before you begin
Consult with your Group Leader and Scout Heritage Victoria.
-
Discuss with the Unit:
- When did our Scout Group start?
- Who were some of the key Leaders and members?
- What traditions or special events does our Group have?
- What does our scarf colour mean?
-
Decide on the scope of the project:
- Will you write a report, create a display, record interviews, or make a video?
- Who in your Unit or Group can help?
-

Activity
Investigate Your Group’s History:
-
- Find out when your Group started
- Research what events, camps, or milestones your Group has been part of
- Ask a Leader or older member about past traditions
- Explore the meaning behind your scarf colours
-
Gather Evidence:
- Locate old photos, documents, or memorabilia
- Interview past Leaders or Scouts to hear their stories
- Visit the Scout Heritage Victoria Centre to learn more about Scouting history
-
Create a Presentation:
- Write a short history of your Group
- Create a display board or slideshow with photos and key facts
- Share your findings with the Unit and present to the Unit Council
Change the challenge level
Easier:
- Focus on one part of history, such as the Groups founding date or scarf meaning
- Work as a small team and divide tasks
Harder:
- Interview multiple former Scouts and Leaders and compile their memories
- Research wider Scouting history in Victoria and how your Group fits in
- Create a digital archive or a short documentary-style video
Reflection
- What was the most interesting thing you learned?
- Did anything surprise you about your Group’s history?
- How can you preserve and share this information for future Scouts?
- If you were to do this again, what would you do differently?
- What impact has your Group had on the community?
