Why do the Duke of Ed in Scouts?
The obvious answer is for Venturers working towards the Venturer Scout King's Scout Award is they can for some additional hours, attain the Silver Award as part of their Scouting achievements.
Selecting areas of your interests from the Special Interest Areas or Outdoor Adventure Skills allows you to undertake challenges as part of your journey in Achievement Pathways. The Adventurous Journey mirrors the requirements of the Venturer Scout King's Scout Adventurous Journey which you will achieve in conjunction with other Venturers in your Unit.
Participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award allows youth members to:
- Step outside your comfort zone and be challenged.
- Have adventures and learn about new passions
- Build confidence, resilience and employability skills.
- Discover that you're capable of things you didn't dream were possible.
Pathways to University
Gain early entry into La Trobe University's Aspire Program.
Through our partnership with La Trobe University, Duke of Ed Awardees gain priority access to study via La Trobe's Aspire early admissions program, recognising that students are worth more than their ATAR.
In 2020, all 283 Duke of Ed applicants to the Aspire Program received early admission offers! The Duke of Ed was the most popular pathway into the program.
Pathways to Employment
The Duke of Ed Employer Program gives young job seekers an edge.
Employers taking part in this initiative will ask prospective employees if they have achieved The Duke if Edinburgh's International Award in their recruitment process.
We currently have over 100 businesses Australia-wide that are committed to harnessing the value of the Duke of Ed Award into their recruitment and staff development programs.
A recent survey of Duke of Ed Gold Awardees in Victoria revealed that 96% believed that Award increased their chance of getting a job and gained confidence to pursue their career goals.
