Hints & Tips

Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)

  • Issued by: Civil Aviation Safety Authority
  • A recreational pilot licence (RPL) is a flight crew licence introduced on 1 September 2014. It authorises pilots to fly light, single‐engine aircraft as the pilot in command, independently of a flight training organisation, without supervision. The RPL is equivalent to the Student Pilot Licence and General Flying Progress Test (GFPT).

Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC)

  • Issued by: Recreational Aviation Australia (www.raa.asn.au/)
  • A Recreational Pilot Certificate allows pilots to fly a one or two seat recreational registered aircraft in uncontrolled airspace during daylight hours within 25 nautical miles of the departure aerodrome. Pilots may fly in good weather conditions only and may use a Driver Licence self‐declared health standard.

Glider Pilot Certificate (GPC)

  • Issued by: Gliding Federation Australia (https://glidingaustralia.org/)
  • The Glider Pilot Certificate qualification recognises the pilot’s ability to carry out cross country flights in varied conditions, operate independently and safely, and be able to fly at any site in Australia.

Glider Pilot Licence (GPL)

  • Issued by: Civil Aviation Safety Authority
  • The Glider Pilot Licence provides international recognition of the Glider Pilot Certificate provided certain experience requirements are satisfied.

Private Balloon Pilot Certificate (BPC)

  • Issued by: Australian Balloon Federation (https://www.abf.net.au/)
  • The Private Balloon Pilot Certificate allows pilots to fly balloons with non‐fare‐paying passengers only.

Balloon Pilot Licence (BPL)

  • Issued by: Civil Aviation Safety Authority
  • The Balloon Pilot Licence allows a pilot to carry farepaying passengers on scenic flights.
