Scouts - Adventurous Journey

Scout Adventurous Journey

The Adventurous Journey is a key part of your Milestone 3 and Peak Award in the Scout section. It’s your chance to put your outdoor and leadership skills into action by planning and leading a real expedition - usually something like a bushwalk, paddle trip, or cycling journey over multiple days.

This isn’t just about completing another hike. It’s about showing that you can take charge: organise the team, plan the route, manage risks, and guide your group through the journey. You’ll need to be prepared, responsible, and ready to lead others - just like you would in any real-world adventure.

Whether you’re a Scout preparing for the challenge or a Leader supporting the process, the FAQs below will help answer the most common questions about how the Adventurous Journey works.

How many Scouts can plan and lead an adventurous journey?

An adventurous journey can be planned and led by one or two Scouts. You can take it on solo or team up with another Scout to share the leadership role.

Even though only one or two Scouts do the planning and leading, you’ll still need a group of other Scouts to take part in the journey. This is important for safety, teamwork, and making the experience meaningful, just like any real expedition. Leaders should make sure both planners are actively involved and that the journey has enough participants to meet supervision and safety requirements.

How long does my adventurous journey need to take?

Your adventurous journey must go for at least 3 days and 2 nights. This means you’ll need to plan and lead a journey that includes two overnight stays and three full days of activity.

It can be longer if you like, but the key is that you’re in charge of planning and leading the journey, not just taking part in it.

Do I have to do a bushwalk for my adventurous journey?

No! Your adventurous journey doesn’t have to be a bushwalk - it can be any human-powered expedition, as long as it meets the requirements.

That means you could go cycling, kayaking, canoeing, ski touring, sailing, or even combine a few of these into one journey. The key is that you’re leading a team, it’s self-powered, and it runs for at least 3 days and 2 nights.

Pick something that excites you, challenges you, and suits your group’s skills and experience.
