Changes to Gilweroo in 2024

We have made some changes to the way activities will run in 2024, including:

  • Each patrol will be allocated 19 / 45 minute time slots over the weekend
  • There will be a 45 minute lunch break on Saturday
  • Activities will be allocated to different zones. Each zone will have multiple activities with some zones having up to four activities
  • We will format the activities so that each patrol has a 45 minute break at the conclusion of water activities, along with another after Air Rifles / Slot Cars just in case things are running behind
  • Patrol leaders & leaders meetings will be held on Friday night (time TBA)
  • The disco will start earlier and finish by 10pm
  • The movie will commence at dark, after sunset

Vehicles at Gilweroo

Vehicles will only be permitted on site on Friday night during Bump In, and after the closing ceremony on Sunday.

Vehicle movement during bump-in Friday night will be limited to cars with trailers. The car park next to the main entrance will be used as a drop-off point for Scouts, and Scouts will need to carry their luggage from the car park to their campsite.

Please keep this in mind when packing, ensuring all equipment and food is in the trailer / vehicle towing the trailer.

Activities at Gilweroo 2024

Activities will run from Saturday morning to just prior to closing parade on Sunday, stopping only for lunch on Saturday (45 minutes) and overnight on Saturday/Sunday. Leaders will be expected to gather at their assigned activitiy 30 minutes prior (7:30am) to determine how the activity is run, add names to the roster, and become familiar with safety requirements. Venturers will be assigned to assist with activities on an as-needed basis - please remember they are assisting and not running the activity.

As you will be required to leave your campsite early to familiarise yourself with the activity, please ensure your patrol leaders have been briefed on Friday night, and that your parent helpers are aware of what is required of the patrol leaders and their own role at camp. If Scouts are late or miss an activity that is not your responsibility

New activities in 2024

We are introducing several new activities in addition to the usual ones, one of which is Wake Biscuits. In this activity, Scouts will be propelled across the water from one end of the pond to the other. Some of you may have seen us trial this last year.

Kiosk and Canteen

Two canteens will be operating, selling everything from sweets, milkshakes, cans of dink, coffee, hot chocolate, and of course donuts. Times will be advertised closer to the event.

About Gilweroo

It has been almost 50 years since Gilweroo started with a small group of leaders.  The idea came from a leadership course held at Gilwell and the leaders decided that they would get together every year with their troops for a reunion.

Gilweroo is a camp for Scouts and linking Cubs.  Venturers and Rovers are utilised to assist in the running of Gilweroo and its activities.

The current home of Gilweroo is the Elmore Events Centre.  Gilweroo has previously been held at both Gilwell Park (Gembrook) and Bay Park (Mt Martha).

Activities

Over the years as Gilweroo has grown, so has the number of activities on offer.  Gilweroo has had exclusive activities such as Air rifles that are not offered at other scout camps.  We have many activities that have been offered in excess of 20 years, and other that are trialled for a year or more.  So, in essence the activities are evolving.  With over 30 activities on offer it is expected that Scouts will find plenty of things to do and enjoy coming each year.

What to Expect

Leaders:

When you bring you troop to Gilweroo leaders need to ensure that they are organised and that the Patrol leaders are capable of ensuring that their patrols stick together and arrive on time to the designated activity area.

Leaders are expected to assist and are allocated an activity to assist on or run.  As a leader you may not be on the activity for the entire weekend, but will ensure that you are allocated an appropriate number of times on the roster.

As a result of this it is important that you bring at least one, capable adult helper.

Adult Helpers:

The key to having a successful Gilweroo is having good adult helpers.  Adult helpers remain in the camp area, when leaders are assisting at activities.  Their job is to ensure that Scouts are fed and sent on their way at the appropriate time to get to activities.

Adult helpers perform the following duties:

  • Prepare and cook all meals
  • Clean up after meals
  • Ensure Scouts are fed and that patrol leaders know where their scouts are.

Scouts:

The role of Scouts is to enjoy themselves and to participate in every activity on offer.  As they are constantly on the go there is little time for them to prepare and clean up meals (hence the adult helper).  Each Scout is part of a patrol and it is the Patrol leaders responsibility to look after the patrol.

Scouts will be active from 8:00am Saturday until the closing ceremony on Sunday.  Time has been set aside for lunch and sleep.

Gilweroo it is considered an activity camp and thus does not offer any structured activities that can be used towards badges or awards.
